The World of Dinosaurs

So, first of all, who really were dinosaurs??

Dinosaurs were a group of creatures that roamed on Earth millions of years ago – in the Mesozoic Era. The era was further divided into epochs, also known as periods. These are the Triassic Period, Jurassic Period and Cretaceous Period. The Triassic Period is marked by the rise of the dinosaur. At the beginning of the Triassic Period there were only plants but evidence shows that in the middle of this period, Dinosaurs evolved.

In order to understand this species, paleontologists have studied their fossils. It has been found that dinosaurs can be categorized in two ways – first, by the structure of their hips, and second, by their diet. By studying their hip structure, dinosaurs have been further categorized into two groups – Saurischians and Ornithiscians. Saurischians means, “lizard-hipped” dinosaurs and Ornithischians means, “bird-hipped” dinosaurs. By studying their diet, dinosaurs can be further categorized into three groups – Carnivores, Herbivores and Omnivores. Carnivores ate other animals, Herbivores ate vegetation and Omnivores ate both animals and vegetation.

Mamenchisaurus or Sauroposeidon – Who was taller?

Does the extraordinary long neck make Mamenchisaurus the tallest dinosaur?

According to evidence that we have, Mamenchisaurus and Sauroposeidon were sauropods. Mamenchisaurus was known for its extraordinary long neck which measured more than half of its body length. Despite having a very long neck, Mamenchisaurus was shorter than Sauroposeidon for two reasons – short legs and an inflexible neck joint. Compared to its neck, the legs were very short which did not contribute to its body height. Also, the joint connecting its neck to the vertebrae was not flexible which restricted upward movement of neck – limiting its height to about 11 meters.

On the other hand, Sauroposeidon despite having a shorter neck had longer feet. Overall, it measured 18 meters and is known for its towering height.
